Smoking and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Oh Yeon-Mok

Abstract
Cigarette smoking causes Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and lung cancer in the respiratory system and also harms the whole body, causing cerebrovascular disease and cardiovascular disease. Informed smokers know that smoking is harmful, but because of its strong addictive nature, it is very difficult for most smokers to cease smoking. Also, the majority of smokers started smoking in their teens. Therefore, early prevention at the adolescent stage is critical. Also, e-cigarette consumption is on the rise, and the damage that e-cigarettes have on the body is becoming a subject of great interest. Although smoking-related COPD is a disease with high prevalence and mortality, it is not well-recognized, and often patients are not properly diagnosed and treated. Actively using well-proven treatments such as smoking cessation, exercise, vaccines, and inhalers can help patients improve dyspnea and lung function, improve exercise capacity, and reduce exacerbation and hospitalization. Furthermore, COPD is a disease that cannot be easily overcome only by the treatments provided in large hospitals. COPD is overcome with more active treatments in a large number of primary care clinics. Just as Korea has made great strides in overcoming diabetes, it must strive to overcome COPD.
